DR. NATHAN SCHOLTEN D.V.M
Dr. Nathan Scholten is an Arizona native, born and raised in Tucson. He attended the University of Arizona for his undergraduate studies before being accepted to Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. While at CSU, he was honored with the prestigious Upjohn Award for Proficiency & Excellence in Small Animal Medicine.
After earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, Dr. Scholten returned to Tucson to begin his career in small animal practice. It was there he met and married Dr. Valerie Jo Otte, an OB/GYN physician. The couple later relocated to Omaha, Nebraska, where Dr. Otte completed her residency and Dr. Scholten joined the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps.
During his military service, Major Scholten oversaw the health and welfare of bomb and narcotic detection dogs. He was later seconded to the United Nations, where he served as Commander of the 53rd Medical Detachment, Veterinary Corps, and led veterinary operations during Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti.
When the couple returned to Arizona, Dr. Scholten joined Hopi Animal Hospital in Scottsdale—just two weeks after moving back home. Within six months, he purchased the practice and began a seven-year transformation, evolving it from a low-cost spay and neuter clinic into one of Arizona’s most medically advanced private veterinary hospitals. In 2004, he relocated the hospital to its current location on Bell Road.
With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Scholten’s professional interests include surgery, diagnostic ultrasound, and ophthalmology. He divides his time between practicing medicine, managing his team of 12 dedicated staff members, and enjoying life with his family and dogs. Outside of veterinary medicine, he is also an accomplished jade carver.
Dr. Scholten has been featured in major media outlets including CBS, ABC, NBC, Bloomberg, and USA Today, offering expert insights on pet health and surgical care. His guiding philosophy—and the foundation of his practice—is simple:
“Quality without Compromise.”
